Master Chaplain Chris Breyer
Fire Department ChaplaincyIsaiah 61: The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted To give them beauty for ashes
Being involved in many facets of ministry for 25 years has brought many challenges for Chaplain Breyer. His ministry work has ranged from teaching on Apologetics and cult evangelism to a very strong wedding ministry and emergency Chaplaincy work. Besides his speaking schedule at churches and to secular crowds, Col. Breyer is also Founder and the CEO/Administrative Director of the Bear Valley Trauma Recovery Team and the Bear Valley Chaplains located in Big Bear Lake, California. Drawing on his years of Chaplain experience with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, Fire Department and the Healthcare industry, Col. Breyer developed a unique concept of Chaplaincy in this Valley. This concept included capabilities of augmenting first responder teams through training in First Aid, CPR, Grief Recovery, Disaster Relief, Crowd Control and overall Counseling, providing assistance to all government agencies in the Valley with spiritual/emotional support, Crisis Intervention and Trauma Recovery.
Working with first responder agencies such as Fire, EMS and local medical helicopter services, and the Sheriff's Department, he established and in many cases taught capabilities to his Chaplains which go well beyond what is normally expected of a Chaplain. As part of this, he required that all Chaplains be either ordained or be an elected, trained and experienced pastoral elder.
As an example of his leadership abilities, Chaplain Breyer put together a team of five Chaplains and three counselors from the community to assist the staff at a local children's camp immediately following the death of a child at the camp. Most of this team was on scene at the camp within an hour accompanied by the local fire chief. The team was on scene for most of the next day to provide spiritual guidance along with individual and group grief recovery assistance. He also commanded a team of 10 Sheriff and Fire Chaplains for 30 hours at the 1999 Forest Falls Flooding Disaster in Forest Falls California, receiving a certificate of appreciation from the San Bernardino County Fire Chief's Association. In May of 2003 this team received a certificate of appreciation from the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors.
Because of the specialized training directed by Chaplain Breyer, they have been called upon for assistance in fires, vehicular accidents, floods, deaths and several instances of crowd control and spiritual/emotional support at the local hospital emergency room and intensive care unit. They are often called out in the case of a death in order to provide coordination between first responders and families and friends. Because of the Emergency Agencies confidence in this team, it is not unusual for their supervisors to release them shortly after someone from Chris's team arrives on scene. This is a reflection of the training instilled under the leadership of Chaplain Chris Breyer.
Chaplain Breyer has also set up a Chaplaincy program at Riverside Community Hospital, a 102 year old Trauma Facility. His Chaplains respond to Trauma Codes and are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year. Chaplain Breyer is the Grief and Spiritual Support Counselor for the new Cancer Center at Riverside Community Hospital. He is also on their Palliative Care Educational and Steering Committees.
